"Portrait Photographer to the Stars"
In 1954, Bob Willoughby was hired by Warner Bros. to shoot
candid photos of Judy Garland while on the set of "A Star Is Born."
From that point on, Willoughby enjoyed success as one of the foremost
Hollywood photographic portrait artists. Much of his work is well known,
most notably his portraits of Audrey Hepburn, Dustin Hoffman and Frank
Sinatra.
In 1963, Willoughby worked with Barbra Streisand during a poolside
photo shoot at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Photos from that session
included well known images of Barbra and Elliott Gould frolicking in
the water. One of those images was featured in an article for the April 10, 1964
edition of
"Time" magazine - Barbra's cover issue.
... And Jason's Official Baby
Photographer
Barbra
sat for Willoughby on several other occasions as well, most notably in
early 1967. Following the birth of their son Jason, Barbra and Elliott
Gould invited Willoughby into their New York apartment to take
several stunning portraits of the new family. With the media clamoring
for photos of the newest member of the Gould family, Barbra and
Elliott took control. Willoughby was authorized by the new parents to
photograph the family for a spread that eventually appeared in the
July 25, 1967 issue of "Look" magazine. The article called "Mama
Barbra" was a photographic essay containing more than half a dozen
candid images of Barbra, Elliott and Jason. Willoughby was also
responsible for the publication of the first "official" Gould family
portrait (right).
