Barbra Honors Warren Beatty

July 2008

From Barbra's video preview on "Entertainment" Tonight"

(July 9) - At the American Film Institute's tribute to Warren Beatty last night in Hollywood, Barbra dropped by (via video) to offer her congratulations. Most notably Barbra reminisced about the time she and Beatty worked together at the McGovern benefit in 1972. This moment took on special meaning as Barbra offered up a rare personal recollection of one of the major milestones of her career.

The Forum Concert Remembered
At the AFI Tribute to Warren Beatty, Barbra rekindled some special memories when she spoke about her involvement in the McGovern benefit of 1972. That benefit featured performance sets by Barbra, James Taylor and Carole King. The evening was the brain child of Beatty: a fundraiser for presidential candidate George McGovern would support efforts to unseat incumbent president Richard Nixon.

At the AFI tribute, Barbra recalled,

"I did get to be in one Warren Beatty production: the concert for George McGovern in 1972. I wasn't doing live performances then, but Warren is very persuasive and impressive, as a matter of fact, he masterminded everything from the invitations to getting famous people as ushers like Jack Nicholson, Burt Lancaster, Cass Elliott. And after all the insecurity and stage fright, I was really glad that Warren made me perform because it was for a man I truly admire."

The conclusion of Barbra's AFI video was her introduction of former Senator McGovern, who was in the auditorium. McGovern took the opportunity to offer his own personal response to Barbra's words:

"It's very moving for me to hear Barbra Streisand, this woman of matchless talent, speak so generously about that '72 campaign, even though it was a losing one. And I agree with her. It might have been better for the country if we had prevailed."
