Barbra, Live!

Timeless

Dec 1999

Barbra at The Actors Studio

The creation of our website, Barbratimeless, began with our reports on Barbra Streisand's "Timeless" concerts. We went to all of them, including Australia, and reported back to friends who could then read about the concerts online.

Celebrating the Millennium in Las Vegas
© barbratimeless 1999, 2006(Jan 2, 2000) - Barbra returned to the Las Vegas stage in triumphant fashion after a six year absence.  Barbra's millennium Las Vegas concerts on New Years Eve and New Years Day proved to be the quintessential millennium celebration.  She came back to the MGM Grand with a stylish new show called "Timeless."  Again, as in 1994, her concert took on a biographical theme.

Many surprises were in store.  Her renditions of "A Sleepin' Bee," "Lover, Come Back To Me" and "Cry Me A River" gave younger fans a rare glimpse into Barbra's Greenwich Village club days. She even surprised her faithful when she rolled out on a secretary's chair to gave a rendition of "Miss Marmelstein."  Many fans familiar with the original cast recording of "I Can Get It For You Wholesale" commented that her "new" version of "Marmelstein" seemed to lack the spirit and comic element of Barbra's 1962 stage performance.  "Miss Marmelstein" - unplugged - would be dropped for the Australia, LA and NYC legs of the tour.  The performance, however, has been captured for posterity on the DVD edition of "Timeless."

The reviews were spectacular.  As a fan experience, perhaps the reviewer for the Las Vegas Review-Journal summed it up best:
"Streisand's world is the theater of her own life, and fans considered it a sacred rite to welcome the new year in her own controlled reality."

Note: Barbra set an all-time record for the highest grossing single concert in Las Vegas history.  Her New Year's Eve show generated revenues of $14,694,750 by selling only 12,477 tickets.  Barbra was rumored to have been paid $10,000,000 for that single performance.

Live in Sydney, The Wet Album
Barbra performing in Sydney(Mar 11, 2000) - For Streisand fans Down Under, the announcement that Barbra Streisand was coming to two cities in Australia with her "Timeless" concert tour was just about the biggest news imaginable.

In Sydney, "Timeless" was performed at the Sydney Football Stadium.  It's a magnificent outdoor venue and home of the city's professional rugby team. Singing in this splendid outdoor arena marked Barbra's triumphant return to paid open air concerts for the public, the first since her concert tour in the mid-sixties.

The rains wreaked havoc for Barbra and concert promoters during the Sydney dates.  For several days before the first scheduled show, it poured incessantly.  When the big day arrived, fans waited, listened to special concert reports on TV and radio and were finally given the official word at 5:30 PM:  Barbra's first ever Australian concert would be postponed for 24 hours.

But the show did eventually go on. The concert premiered on March 9, a day late. Barbra's Australian opening night went off without a hitch. The clouds held back. The weather was magnificent.  And Barbra gave her first Australian audience a brilliant performance.

A Barbratimeless flashback

The second night in Sydney was a bit different. Welcome to the 'Wet Album' - live! Those were Barbra's welcoming words to a soggy but packed audience on her second and closing night concert in Sydney.  The rains arrived before show time and had a dramatic, if not spectacular impact on the performance. This time, Barbra could not postpone since she was due to arrive in Melbourne the next day. People, clad in plastic rain ponchos, sat in the driving downpour while Barbra performed.

As Act 2 began, and with the rains still driving hard, Barbra reappeared, this time appropriately outfitted with rain gear.  She wore tennis shoes, an Australian bush hat and an outback rain slicker.  She asked the audience if it would be OK for her to perform in her casual clothes, promising to send everyone pictures of her usual Act 2 outfit.

Barbra's performance this night, perhaps because of the weather was the best of the Australian tour.  She showed her appreciation for everyone sitting in such inclement weather by delivering a rousing rendition of "Come Rain or Come Shine."  Not her usual encore, Barbra thought it appropriate for the evening. After a successful performance of the ballad in Sydney, Barbra included it as an encore for the rest of the tour.

Technical Difficulties in Melbourne
The cover of "Inside Melbourne"(Mar 18, 2000) - Melbourne's Colonial Stadium was the venue showcasing Barbra in Australia's second city.  "Timeless" represented a series of inaugural concerts presented at this new stadium.  Built on the docklands of the city, Colonial Stadium has a retractable roof and was touted as a state of the art facility...perfect for concerts. Or so they said.

Technical sound difficulties in Melbourne were to replace the weather problems of Sydney.  Barbra's first show in Melbourne was marred by significant acoustical deficiencies.  Barbra actually stopped the show in Act 1 to address the problem with her audience.  "Either there are two of me or it's very disturbing", she offered.  However, all problems were fixed by Act 2.  But for the next several days, Colonial Stadium's acoustics was the topic of conversation all over town.

Barbra had a lot of fun on closing night in Melbourne.  She even bantered from the stage with members of the local Australian fan club.  As an encore, Barbra offered "You Don't Bring Me Flowers."  A huge hit in Australia, the number received a thunderous ovation by the Melbourne audience.  Barbra admitted that she wished she had included the ballad in all her Australian shows.

As Hollywood royalty prepared to leave the country, British royalty was preparing to arrive.  An intriguing article in one of the local papers pitted the Queen's popularity against Barbra's and even provided a debate as to which celebrity would garner more press and public attention.  It would prove to be a close race according to the media.

Los Angeles Opening Night
(Sep 20, 2000) - It was an emotional Barbra Streisand who took to the Staples Center stage tonight for her opening night of  "Timeless" in Los Angeles.  The audience was star-studded. Barbra made many of the introductions herself from the stage.  One of her most sentimental introductions of the night came before she began singing "Cry Me A River." Barbra introduced Orson Bean from the audience, who played host to Barbra's first television appearance decades ago.  Other celebrities were littered throughout the $2500 seats including Jeff ("Jeffy") Bridges ("The Mirror Has Two Faces") and Burt Bacharach who got a huge ovation when Barbra introduced him before singing "Alfie."  Other notables in attendance were Ray Stark ("Funny Girl" et al.), Sydney Portier, Sally Kellerman, Neil Diamond (a live duet would have been great!), Goldie Hawn, Sydney Pollack ("The Way We Were"), Roseanne Barr, John Travolta ("Johnny" flew down from his location shoot in Oregon to attend the show," Barbra explained), Kelly Preston, Pierce Brosnan ("The Mirror Has Two Faces"), Selma Hayek, Leeann Rhimes, Angelica Houston, Sherry Lansing, Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt.  James Brolin sat front row, center.  Diana Kind was absent.  Barbra informed us that her mother, 92, now resides in a nursing home.

Act 1 was slightly changed from The Vegas and Australia shows with the insertion of a killer rendition of "Come Rain or Come Shine" earlier in the program and the surprise inclusion of "Love Like Ours" from Barbra's most recent studio album.  Barbra's first costume was a simple golden-brown pants suit number - a color variation on the same outfit she wore in previous shows.

Barbra's voice was strong and as melodic as ever.  The opening overture was the same tap-dance number as seen in the Las Vegas shows.  The "Time Wizard" was played by a dancer named Mark Mendonca.  Barbra's orchestra was conducted by William Ross.  The absence of Marvin Hamlisch was not felt.

The big changes to the program occurred in Act 2.  Her costume was a dazzling black off-the-shoulder top with matching floor length dress.  "Auld Lang Syne" and "At The Same Time" were omitted.  In it's place, Barbra performed "The Music That Makes Me Dance" (she dedicated the song to the late Julie Styne and spoke with Ray Stark from the stage about their days together at the Winter Garden).  "My Man" and "Before The Parade Passes By" (singing the introduction/ballad portion of the song) were huge surprises and two of the biggest crowd pleasers of the night.  At this point in the show, sensing that something was missing, the audience burst out in a spontaneous chant of "People, People, People."  Barbra immediately picked up on what was going on and came back with a classic reply to the good natured protest.  "It's not over till the fat lady sings," Barbra informed us.  The crowd went crazy and we were indeed treated to "People" as Barbra's closing number of the evening.

Barbra officially told us that she was retiring from live concerts, but not from show business. She intends to continue making movies, recording albums and working on other projects.

Lots of new concert merchandise was available at the arena.  The concert program has a new look using the same photo and graphics as the "Timeless" CD which, incidentally, was not on sale.  Barbra added some new personal comments to the program:

"It's bittersweet to say farewell to live performing, but it feels right to say goodbye in two cities I think of as home.  I'm looking forward to exploring new chapters in my life...I'll always love the process of creating.  I'm so appreciative that you've been there to take the journey with me.
With love - Barbra"

Other must-have collectibles included a new limited edition "Timeless" paperweight, plastic key chain, an assortment of specially designed T-shirts commemorating her last performances in Los Angeles (special to the LA shows only), T-shirts commemorating both LA and NYC shows, coffee mugs, postcards and two new styled baseball caps.  As if these newly designed official souvenirs weren't enough, people were able to buy bootleg T-shirts outside the venue for 10 bucks.

The event, all in all, was nothing short of dazzling - an emotional spectacular for everyone in attendance, including Barbra.

Los Angeles Closing Night

© barbratimeless.com 2000,2006(Sep 22, 2000) - Barbra Streisand gave an informal party last night for 20,000 of her close friends.  She kicked off her heals (literally) and thrilled a packed Staples Center with the most relaxed concert I have ever seen her perform.  Her musical brilliance was nearly overshadowed by her comic wit over and over again as the evening progressed.

Barbra was playing to her friends - definitely the A-List of Hollywood - and she didn't disappoint.  Among those watching in awe on LA's closing night were Elizabeth Taylor, who certainly rates a 10 on the celeb-o-meter.  She arrived 5 minutes before the show began and took her seat next to James Brolin as the crowd went wild.  The Queen of the Nile was in the house.  Joining LaLiz in the VIP seats were the likes of Dustin Hoffman, Debrah Messing, Barry Manilow, Roger Clinton, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Carol Bayer Sager and Barbra Sinatra.  Even Dick Clark was in attendance.  Barbra told him, "You still look great," a personal aside during the Shirley Maclaine routine.  Jack Nicholson ("On A Clear Day You Can See Forever") was there, too, watching the show from his usual Lakers center-court seat.  Barbra reminisced about working with Jack on "Clear Day" and how she helped this budding actor to properly take direction from Vincente Minnelli.  Jack could be heard playfully responding to Barbra's good natured ribbing.  It was a moment like no other.  With Renee Taylor, Barbra waxed nostalgic about their days in the Village when they shared the same bill.

Barbra's performance was exceptional this evening.  Perhaps because it was a closing night, Barbra's renditions were overflowing with emotion. Even this night's version of "People" seemed to take on a more poignant meaning for Barbra.  She wore her feelings on her sleeve for all to see and hear as she sang her final song of the evening.  It was a special moment.

As the curtains closed for the very last time on a Barbra Streisand concert in Los Angeles, Barbra wished everyone a happy life.  It was a wrap.

It was also the end of an era.

New York Opening Night
(Sep 27, 2000) - Barbra returned home tonight!  She triumphed among thousands of her most ardent fans, family and more show business stars than I've ever seen at one of her concerts.  Her performance was riveting.  Being home, Barbra's performance was pure sentiment.   She was moved to tears during the closing curtain calls...giving us one extra bow and a big surprise - her patented "Funny Girl" time step - to thunderous ovations.  Her renditions included an extra bonus - "Send In The Clowns," an homage to Stephen Sondheim who was in attendance.  Marvin Hamlisch was there, too, taking in "Timeless" from the other side of the footlights for the very first time.  Others in the crowd, and it was a huge crowd indeed, included Ann Hampton Callaway (taking a night off from her starring turn in Broadway's "Swing") who got a very gracious thank you from Barbra for writing the lyrics to her wedding song.  Rosie O'Donnell was there with her video cam, basking as one in a multitude of fans who came to the show to witness Barbra's opening night in New York.  Regis and Joy Philbin were there, too, along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Bernadette Peters, Madeline Albright, Eli Wallach ("Nuts") and his wife Anne Jackson, Drew Barrymore, former Mayor David Dinkins, Michele Legrand, Tony Bennett, Penny Marshall, Elaine May, Shirley Jones, Isabella Rossalini, Polly Bergen, designer Donna Karan, columnist Frank Rich and producer Harvey Weinstein.  The list goes on and on.

"My Man" was nailed solid by Barbra tonight.  Her rendition was incredible...heartfelt and riveting with emotion.  Ditto for "The Music That Makes Me Dance" which received a huge ovation from the entire arena.  Barbra's Bon Soir and Basin Street East song set was equally as exciting with some of those in attendance apparently having actually seen Barbra's original cabaret performances back in the 60's.

A Barbra Streisand opening night is special.  This Barbra Streisand opening night in NYC was an event which could not possibly be topped by any other performance with the exception of, I anticipate, her closing night of all time.

New York Closing Night
© barbratimeless.com 2000,2006(Sep 28, 2000) - Barbra Streisand will never sing in concert again. That was the glum realization after tonight's final performance of "Timeless" at Madison Square Garden.  Barbra sang her heart out tonight, over and over again throughout the two hour concert extravaganza.  The audience poured out an amazing amount of adulation all evening long.  A sustained standing ovation which lasted several minutes stopped the show and reduced Barbra to tears.  It was the climax of a thirty-eight year career, ending in her home town,  where it all began.

Barbra's performance of all her classics took on new meaning in an evening full of tears and emotional highs.  No one in the audience wanted it to end.  Barbra promised that this was indeed not the end, but the new beginning of a new chapter of her life.  Each song was a solo farewell to her legions of fans.  Each ballad a keepsake memory for all of us.

A Barbratimeless flashback

Sharing in the historic moment tonight was a litany of celebrities, family, friends, and yes, even Barbra's housekeeper.  Barbra's brother Sheldon Streisand, son Jason Gould and cousin Mel Streisand were there to witness musical history in the making.  Show business glitterati came out in force to wish Barbra a fond farewell to her public singing career.  Amy Irving ("Yentl"), Billy Crystal, Jesse Jackson, Barbara Walters (with whom Barbra announced she will do an upcoming television interview), Lauren Bacall ("The Mirror Has Two Faces"), Martha Stewart, Peter Bogdanovich ("What's Up, Doc?"),  Rosie O'Donnell (taking in her second show in as many nights), Glenn Close, Senators Barbara Mikulski (D) of Maryland and Charles Schumer (D) of New York, Anne Mera and Jerry Stiller, Phyllis Newman, Michele Legrand, Scott Glenn, Mrs. Julie Styne, Lorraine Bracco and Brooke Shields were all front and center as Barbra bid farewell to public performing.

What else is left to say? Barbra Streisand is the greatest singer the world has ever known. Her live performances will now exist only as cherished memories of something extraordinary.  The twentieth century has born witness to the musical miracle that is Barbra Streisand, and we were all there.

We are the luckiest people in the world.
