Goodbye to Tavern on the Green

Jan 2010

The famed Central Park bistro "Tavern on the Green," which hosted two Streisand premiere galas and was prominently featured in "The Mirror Has Two Faces" has closed its doors for good.

(Jan 1, 2010) - We were saddened to learn that "Tavern on the Green," the legendary upscale eatery in New York's Central Park has gone out of business after 75 years.  The owners, forced to file for bankruptcy, decided to cut their losses by closing up shop after one final New Years Eve celebration last night.

Of course "Tavern on the Green" holds special significance for Barbra Streisand and her fans. Barbra filmed a key scene at Tavern on October 31, 1995 for her film "The Mirror Has Two Faces." Cast and crew took over the restaurant for a two night shoot that went on without a hitch.

The scene was filmed in the restaurant's renowned Crystal Room. It was in that same room where cast, crew and invited friends gathered on November 10, 1996 for the film's premiere party. We, along with many other fans, were among those invited by TriStar Pictures to attend this once in a lifetime premiere gala. Barbra and her costars were there, along with a cadre of New York celebrities for an evening of great food, drink and overall revelry.

But this was not the first Streisand film premiere to have been hosted at Tavern. In 1976, Barbra partied at Tavern on the Green into the wee hours of the morning during the opening night premiere party for "A Star Is Born."
