The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame

Last night, Paul Simon told the Rock 'n'' Roll Hall of Fame audience that Barbra Streisand is not rock 'n' roll.

When Hall of Fame inductee Neil Diamond defended our gal, he also raised an interesting issue.

Hall of Fame Inducts Laura Nyro

April 15, 2012 (UPDATE)
The annual Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies were held this weekend in Cleveland with the posthumous election of Laura Nyro, one of Barbra Streisand's more prolific musical collaborators.

Nyro wrote "Stoney End" - a rock number that became an enormously successful single for Barbra in the early 70s. "Stoney End" spent 18 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart.

On her "Stoney End" album, Barbra also recorded Nyro's "Time and Love" and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man), both Billboard Hot 100 hits as well. On the "Barbra Joan Streisand" album, Barbra included Nyro's "I Never Meant to Hurt You."

Bette Midler was on hand to induct Laura Nyro into the Hall of Fame. Nyro's son, musician Gil Bianchini accepted the award on behalf of his mother.

"If it's Barbra Streisand, it's not rock 'n' roll" - Paul Simon, March 14

March 15, 2011

At the 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in New York last night, the topic of Barbra Streisand actually came up when Neil Diamond (yes, Neil Diamond) was inducted.
Here's how Jim Farber of the New York Daily News reported the on-stage Streisand discussion:

When Paul Simon inducted Diamond, he pondered why the honor took so long. 'Six words,' he said, before quoting the title of Diamond's hit with Barbra Streisand, 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore.'

'Unfortunately if it's Barbra Streisand, it's not rock 'n' roll,' Simon said.

'I would still sing that song,' Diamond responded. 'I don't give a s--t. And guess what? Barbra doesn't give a s--t, either.'

Bravo, Neil, for respecting Barbra, not to mention one of the most successful duets in music history.

If you thought that election into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was reserved for such over-the-top artists as Alice Cooper, The Doors and U2, guess again. In past years, mainstream performers like Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole Etta James and Brenda Lee have each made the cut. Which begs the question: why hasn't Barbra Streisand been called for election?

Listen to the "Stoney End" album. Or "Barbra Joan." Or "A Star Is Born." Barbra not only qualifies for Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame election, but she should have been inducted years ago.

Like Neil Diamond and others, Barbra is a successful crossover recording artist. She is also, unequivocally, a rock 'n' roll performer. Recognition must be paid.
