That Much of a Dope She
Ain't
September 17, 2009
A New York Post "Page Six" article today, which
intimates that a Cutest Pet promotional contest might have been
rigged (the winner wins a free trip to NYC to see Barbra at The
Vanguard) has prompted corrective action by Columbia Records, and this
response from Barbra's camp:
It's important to establish that however
strange the coincidence, the people at Sony who judged the cute dog
photo contest legitimately selected the winning photo with absolutely
no knowledge or indication that it was from someone Barbra Streisand
knows. And it is true that she knows her because she purchased Sammie
from her, so it is in that respect an acquaintanceship. Barbra did not
take part in the judging because she was quite literally out of
contact on a cruise off the coast of Europe. She certainly would have
avoided that apparent conflict of interests had she been involved.
Once Columbia understood how this situation, however innocently
derived, would be misinterpreted, the people involved elected to name
the runner-up the winner. I'm not aware if Barbra even yet knows that
the situation transpired. It is important for people to understand
that this was intended as a very pure expression of gratitude to her
fans to be fairly judged. And now, with the adjustment accomplished,
that intention has been carried out.
We applaud Columbia for recognizing that
their first-choice winner of this contest was inappropriate. As for
allegations that claim Barbra personally had something to do with the
selection of one of her acquaintances as the winner, well, that's
ludicrous. If Barbra wants specific people or friends to be at The
Vanguard on her big night, she certainly can make that happen without
"fixing" a contest.
As Fanny Brice might say, "That much of a dope she ain't." |
