"The Guilt Trip"
Our Review of the Blu-ray and Bonus Features

April 19, 2012
My first reaction after watching the Blu-ray version of "The Guilt Trip" was how far superior the film looked on my high-def TV than it did when I saw the "2K digitized" version at my local theatre. At home, the film pops off the screen, and as is usually the case with good quality Blu-ray presentations, the colors are vibrant and the most intricate of details are clearly visible.

"The Guilt Trip" Blu-ray is a terrific home entertainment experience.

The film, as we all know, is about a mother and son (played by Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen) and their cross-country journey. The story is ultimately about the strength of familial relationships, and as such, becomes a perfect film for Mother's Day viewing. Indeed, that's exactly how the folks at Paramount Home Media are marketing this new video release (see the Target exclusive edition, below).

The Blu-ray comes chock full of bonus features - about an hour's worth - that are all fun to watch. There's an insightful short documentary starring "Guilt Trip" screenwriter Dan Fogelman and his own mom, Joyce. They talk about their own cross country trip, the journey that actually inspired Fogelman to write "The Guilt Trip" in the first place.  The home video of Dan and Joyce Fogelman's visit to the Grand Canyon is especially intriguing.

You'll really enjoy a look at the two alternate openings from the film. They're all about Andy as a child. Eagle-eyed viewers will immediately notice that a couple of familiar photos of Barbra Streisand and her son Jason were used to represent Joyce and Andy in the early days of Andy's youth. Very clever.

There's also an alternate ending that is completely different from the one chosen for the final cut of the film. It's well done ... but is different in both emotion and message. I like the original theatrical ending, but check out the alternate for yourself. You might prefer it.

The bonus feature called "Not Really a Road Trip Movie" describes how the filmmakers were able to depict a cross-country expedition without leaving the confines of L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. It should more aptly be called Hollywood's Tribute to the Green Screen. The feature, unfortunately doesn't tell us how they filmed that whole Grand Canyon scene using a green screen. Now that would have been interesting to see.

One critique I had when I first saw "The Guilt Trip" at the movies was how underutilized the marvelous Kathy Najimy was in the film. Here, amid the bonus features, we get to see a lot more of this comic actress in scenes with Barbra Streisand that, sadly, ended up on the cutting room floor.

We are also treated to ten or so deleted scenes, several of which, in my opinion, did not enhance the story. Leaving them out of the film's final cut was justified.

The rest of the bonus features are standard behind the scenes stuff, including the required blooper reel, a detailed analysis of the steak-eating scene and a look at the unorthodox directorial style of Anne Fletcher.

For purposes of home viewing, Paramount did a masterful job packaging "The Guilt Trip." It's a video well worth getting for your mom ... or yourself.

We Need a Little "Guilt Trip" Right this Very Minute
Our Review of "The Guilt Trip"

December 21, 2012
Barbra Streisand returns to the big screen as the star of "The Guilt Trip," an intelligent film that offers comedy, drama - and a welcome distraction from the turbulence of our times. For 90 minutes at least, "The Guilt Trip" lets us forget about fiscal cliffs, gun violence, recessions, and yes, even Mayan apocalypses.

"The Guilt Trip" is light hearted fare that espouses the importance of family. It was written by Dan Fogelman ("Crazy, Stupid, Love") based, oddly enough, on e-mails he sent during an actual cross country trip with his own mom. The resulting script, as such, isn't deep, placing the success of the film squarely on the shoulders of its lead performers. Fortunately, Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen have the
personalities and on-screen chemistry to pull it off.

Barbra plays Joyce Brewster, a New Jersey widow and mother of Andy, a chemical engineer/salesman, played by Rogen. Andy invites Joyce to spend eight days with him in a car as he travels cross country to peddle a product. His motive? To reunite Joyce with her first love, the man she knew before marrying his father. It's a nice gesture from a good son. But does Joyce really know why she gets to tag along? Therein lies the rub.

Joyce is a mildly overbearing mom who's on the receiving end of her son's indignation for most of the film's sluggish first half. It's not until Joyce puts Andy in his place that the film establishes its legs. Mom and son finally get to interact with each other in a manner that's actually fun to watch.

Barbra has two particular scenes that are the definition of acting par excellence. They are quick reminders that her impeccable comic timing is equally as impressive as her dramatic turns. The fact that she is able to deliver both, almost simultaneously, is amazing. These two scenes alone are award-worthy.

Seth does a fine job playing the willful son. The part of Andy had to be a challenge for the actor whose job, until now, was relegated to playing a series of typecast roles. Appearing opposite one of the movie greats of our time propelled him to another level. After all, this is a Streisand movie. Fortunately for us, Rogen was ready for his upgrade.

Director Anne Fletcher ("The Proposal" and "27 Dresses") invites a few familiar faces to make cameo appearances in the film as well. Oh, to have had more of the inimitable Kathy Najimy and the marvelous Nora Dunn. But with no room in the back seat (save for the occasional well read hitchhiker), we're left to savor their all too brief walk-ons.

"The Guilt Trip" rewards us with a truly great payoff at the end. We experience the love and warmth between Andy and Joyce, and as the credits roll, we also feel good about the loved ones in our own lives.

Isn't that just what we all need a little of this particular holiday season?

Candid on NPR

December 17, 2012
Kudos to NPR host and journalist Terry Gross, who conducted one of the most thorough, informative and emotional interviews with Barbra Streisand we've heard or seen in years.

The 45 minute interview, broadcast today over NPR stations was supposed to be routine promotion for "The Guilt Trip." Indeed, the film received its fair share of plugs. But the interview was so well moderated that Barbra felt comfortable enough to open up about a whole host of non-Guilt Trip related subjects, including some very personal stories about her mom and dad.

And speaking of mom, Barbra even gave us a release date for the "Back to Brooklyn" DVD. It'll be on store shelves in time for Mothers Day.

You can listen to this exceptional interview
here.

Barbra Embraces Duck Sauce

December 12, 2012
Forget the Golden Globes. The ad exec who came up with this latest "Guilt Trip" promo should win a CLIO award. If you haven't see it yet, check it out here. It's the one with Barbra and Seth, as themselves, driving in their car with the radio on. And what are they listening to? Why, Duck Sauce's club hit, "Barbra Streisand" of course.

In the clip, Barbra is bopping to the beat of the song. And when the lyric Barbra Streisand comes on, she looks at the radio, grins, and says, "Me!"

Brilliant.

"The Guilt Trip" Screenings and Premiere

December 11, 2012
On December 2, "The Guilt Trip" was screened in about a dozen cities across the U.S. in advance of the film's gala premiere two days later.

Barbra, Seth Rogen, and director Anne Fletcher attended the preview screening at one of the AMC theatres in Century City, Los Angeles. Following the screening, Barbra and Seth participated in a Q and A session, moderated by TIME magazine's Joel Stein, that was beamed live to all the other theatres.

The film had its official premiere on December 11 at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, Los Angeles. Barbra was accompanied to the opening by husband James Brolin, but walked the red carpet with her co-star, Seth Rogen (right). Dozens of media outlets set up booths in the plaza of the theatre. Barbra and Seth stopped by each of them for brief interviews in front of the cameras.

By all accounts, the premiere, as a promotional event for the film, was an unqualified success. Those brief interviews that Barbra and Seth stopped to give were broadcast on nearly every entertainment program (and on some news stations like CNN) that evening.

Some of the luminaries spotted at the premiere included Josh Brolin, Diane Lane, cast members Nora Dunn and Colin Hanks, and our favorite red carpet A-Lister, Barbra's 1964 "Funny Girl" understudy, Lainie Kazan.

Dr. Phil Appearance

December 10, 2012
Barbra and Seth Rogen appeared on Dr. Phil today in what turned out to be a surprisingly entertaining interview. The appearance was an important part of the promotion Barbra and Seth's upcoming film, "The Guilt Trip."

A "Guilt Trip" Sequel?

December 10, 2012
December 10 was Press Junket Day for "The Guilt Trip." Barbra and Seth Rogen sat down with a number of media outlets for brief interviews to help promote their film. While most of the interviews remained on topic, Marc Malkin of "E! News" went above and beyond, perhaps speaking for fans everywhere when he got Barbra to talk about "Gypsy" (will she direct?), Lady Gaga (will she co-star?) and a possible "Guilt Trip" sequel (Europe, anyone?). Thanks, Marc. You asked all the right questions.

Check out the
E! News interview here.

And don't miss these interviews:
Channel Ten Australia and Jake's Takes.

Barbra on The Today Show

December 7, 2012
Barbra Streisand took umbrage at the perception that she is a diva, one of the more revealing aspects from her interview with Savannah Guthrie on NBC's Today Show December 7. Those tuning in also got to see a bit of Hi-Def footage from Barbra's recent Brooklyn concert, presumably from an upcoming DVD.

Guthrie went to California last week for the sit-down with Barbra. It's all part of Barbra's extraordinary efforts to help promote her film, "The Guilt Trip."

Poster and Trailer are Released; New Opening Date

October 30, 2012
The poster and trailer for "Guilt Trip" was released recently, providing fans with a first real look at Barbra and Seth Rogen's upcoming comedy. The 2 1/2 minute trailer is chock full of comic nuggets that will certainly have fans of both performers clamoring for a ticket when the film opens on December 19 (it's new premiere date).

First Teaser Clip Released

September 25, 2012
We got our first glimpse today at the upcoming Barbra Streisand/Seth Rogen comedy "The Guilt Trip." A 60 second clip, titled Cross Country is currently streaming on Yahoo. The scene features both stars in a kitchen scene when Andy (Seth) asks Joyce (Barbra) to join him on a cross country trip.

Kathy Najimy Plays It Cool

July 17, 2012
Kathy Najimy, one of our favorite comic actors, will appear opposite Barbra Streisand in "The Guilt Trip."

And she's talking about it.

In an appearance on "The Wendy Williams Show" this past May, Najimy gushed as she told of her experience working with Barbra: "Like most girls my age, I grew up loving 'Funny Girl.' I saw it like 40 times when I was 13. I ended up, this year, playing her in a movie. I was trying to be her peer and trying to be cool."

And just last week, Najimy played it cool with Andy Cohen on Bravo's "Watch What Happens." When asked about working on the picture, she said, "It's no big deal. I'm just working with Barbra Streisand."

LOL, Kathy. What can we say? You're is gonna be great in "The Guilt Trip."

New Title, New Date

August 17, 2011
Looks like there are changes afoot regarding Barbra's next film. It's been confirmed that the title My Mother's Curse has been scrapped and replaced by the more descriptive Guilt Trip. And (it's rumored that) Paramount will change the opening date from March to November, 2012.

Barbra Films at Caesar's Palace

July 17, 2011
Barbra never gave a concert at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas (well, not yet, anyway), but she did capture the attention of the hotel's guests and staff on July 14. Barbra was there to shoot scenes for her upcoming film, "My Mother's Curse."

We dropped by to catch a glimpse of Barbra. She and co-star Seth Rogen were preparing to shoot a scene in the mail lobby of Caesar's as hotel guests and staff watched in amazement. The Vegas scenes are presumably the only ones that were filmed at actual locations as called for in the script. Read our complete report from the Las Vegas set
here.

With filming at Caesars Palace now complete, "My Mother's Curse" has officially wrapped.

Casting Update: Colin Hanks

May 26, 2011
The Hollywood Reporter announced that Colin Hanks (Tom's son) has joined the cast of "My Mother's Curse."

In the film, Hanks and Yvonne Strahovski will play the young married couple who offer Barbra and Seth Rogen emergency refuge during a blinding snow storm. It's sure to be a hilarious scene with Yvonne playing one of Seth's former girl friends.

In 2010, Hanks made a name for himself by receiving terrific notices for his role on the TV cop series, "The Good Guys." In 2008, Colin co-starred opposite Josh Brolin, the son of another actor you might have heard of. The picture was Oliver Stone's "W."

72º and Clear Skies? Snow Way!

May 24, 2011
When we first saw pix of Barbra and Seth Rogen filming a snowbound scene from "My Mother's Curse" (published in the UK's "Daily Mail"), we were hard pressed to believe they were actually on location in balmy L.A.

We checked and the weather was 72º with clear skies the day of the shoot.

MMC Supporting Cast Slowly Being Revealed

May 13, 2011
With filming of "My Mother's Curse" now in high hear, we're finally learning who some of the supporting players are.

Kathy Najimy
(May 16 UPDATE) - Kathy Najimy (above, right) confirmed on Twitter that she began filming scenes with Barbra on May 4. She plays Joyce's best friend in the picture. We love Kathy and are excited about this particular bit of casting news. She was great in "Sister Act" and "Hocus Pocus." Her casting brings the comic possibilities of "My Mother's Curse" to a new level. And anyone who watched "Funny Girl" 44 times (as Kathy tweeted) gets our seal of approval.

Rick Gonzalez
Rick Gonzalez revealed via Twitter that he has already filmed scenes with Barbra and Seth Rogen on the set in Woodland Hills. In his tweet, Rick shared a candid photo taken with Barbra (above, left). He plays the clerk who rents Joyce and Andy a car for their cross country adventure.

Rick's screen credits include roles in the following films: "War of the Worlds" (with Tom Cruise), "The Rookie (with Dennis Quaid) and "Old School" (with Luke Wilson).

On television, he appeared in "Law and Order SVU," "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," "CSI Miami" and "Reaper" among several others. He is currently appearing in Lady Gaga's video, "Judas."

Yvonne Strahovski
Yvonne Strahovski currently appears opposite Zach Levi as Über-Spy Sarah Walker on the hit NBC television series "Chuck" (above, center). According to "The Hollywood Reporter," Yvonne will play one of Andy's former girl friends in "My Mother's Curse."

Other than "Chuck," Yvonne has appeared in a few nondescript films and TV shows. Being cast opposite Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen will undoubtedly be a big time addition to her resume.

First Pictures from the Set

May 5, 2011
Filming began this week on "My Mother's Curse," Barbra Streisand's 19th feature film. On May 3, Barbra and co-star Seth Rogen were in Southern California filming scenes at a makeshift car rental counter as the two characters begin their cross-country adventure.

A series of images, the first we've seen of Barbra and Seth in character as Joyce and Andy Brewster, were captured by photographers Eric Ford & Danny Mayer. Their contact sheet of 26 photos can be viewed
here

In "My Mother's Curse,"  mom Joyce and son Andy embark on a cross country road trip. Andy's ulterior motive is simple: he wants to reunite Joyce with her long lost love. "My Mother's Curse" is tentatively scheduled for a March 30, 2012 opening.

Save the Date

July 17, 2012 (UPDATE)
"The Guilt Trip" opening date has now been changed to December 25, 2012. The studio is anticipating a blockbuster for the holidays.

March 1, 2012 (UPDATE)
The official opening date for "The Guilt Trip" has been changed to November 2, 2012.

March 9, 2011
Broadwayworld.com and Deadline.com are both reporting that Paramount Pictures has slated March 30, 2012 as the opening day for "My Mother's Curse." While it may seem premature to announce an opening date for a picture that hasn't even begun shooting (and where's the complete cast list?), at least the film is starting to generate some buzz.

As for that March 30, 2012 opening, what can we say? Enter it in your date books just in case - but use a pencil.

"My Mother's Curse" Gets Green Light: Hollywood Reporter

January 28, 2011

Just as the tidal wave of "Gypsy" rumors has finally subsided, The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Seth Rogen and Barbra will star in the comedy, "My Mother's Curse." According to The Reporter, Ann Fletcher (The Proposal) will direct. Lorne Michaels, along with Barbra, Rogen and others will share producing credits.

Barbra teaming up with Seth Rogen in "My Mother's Curse" has been a hot Hollywood rumor for the past year. And now that the Paramount has finally given the green light, shooting is expected to begin this spring. The film will be a road comedy with Seth's character taking his mother on a cross country trip to reunite her with a lost love.

So, Who is Seth Rogen Anyway?
He just happens to be one of the biggest Hollywood stars on the contemporary scene today. At just 29, Rogen has already appeared in over a dozen films - like 2008's "Pineapple Express" and the recently released "The Green Hornet" - both box office hits.

Rogen has done quite a bit of voiceover work as well. You probably heard him on TV episodes of "The Simpsons" and "American Dad." He also voiced characters for the animated features "Kung Fu Panda" and "Shrek the Third."

According to IMDb, Rogen currently has four films primed for release and two in pre-production, including "My Mother's Curse."
