Alan & Marilyn Bergman, composers of "The
Way We Were" were profiled on "CBS Sunday Morning." |

|
|
(March 7) - As part of
its spotlight on Academy Award winners, "CBS Sunday Morning"
offered a delightful profile and interview with songwriters Alan &
Marilyn Bergman today. The prolific songwriting team spoke of
their over 50 year marriage and their unsurpassed musical
résumé.
|
 |
Alan & Marilyn are
three-time Oscar winners. They won for "The Windmills of Your
Mind" with Michel Legrand, "The Way We Were" with Marvin Hamlisch,
and for the score of "Yentl" in collaboration with Legrand.
Brief clips were shown from both "The Way We Were" and "Yentl." On
their academy Award winning song "The Way We Were," Marilyn knew
their song was a winner when it evoked tears from early preview
audiences.
As expected, the
discussion quickly turned to their long association with Barbra
Streisand.

 |
CBS integrated several
Streisand vocals into the Bergman profile. We were treated to samplings
of obvious Streisand renditions of "The Way We Were" and "Papa,
Can You Hear Me?". As an added surprise, Barbra's version of the
lesser known Bergman
ballad, "A Child Is Born"
was played during the opening segment of the feature.
The Bergman's had nothing but complimentary things to say about
their decades-long collaboration with Barbra. When she discussed
Barbra's vocals, Marilyn Bergman said, "When we hear her sing
something that we've written, very often there's a layer that
she'll bring to it that we never knew was there."
Quite the compliment from one of America's foremost composers. |
