"Mom, here you are at the Hollywood Bowl" |
|
|
November

|

|
Barbra
returned to the Hollywood Bowl
on November 9, 2012, the first
of a two night engagement that
concluded her most recent North
American tour. Her second and
final show at the Bowl was
November 11th.
Barbra
added one more unique element to
the show, a "Kleenex" moment to
be sure, as show director
Richard-Jay Alexander foretold.
It happened when Barbra paid
tribute to her mother, Diana
Kind. A vintage recording of
Mrs. Kind, singing soprano, was
included in the finale that
featured her two daughters,
Barbra and Roslyn.
Barbra introduced the clip
saying, "Our mother had a very,
very beautiful voice, so I
actually have her here because
she always wanted to be a great
singer. She was a great singer.
So mom, here you are at the
Hollywood Bowl."
Diana Kind passed away in 2002.

Sister Act, Finally! |
|
|
October
30, 2012
|

Roz
and Barbra in Vancouver:
October 29, 2012 |
|
A
delightful new aspect of Barbra's concert tour
is the latter addition of her
sister, Roslyn Kind to the
show's cast. Roz, who just two
months ago told a BBC
interviewer that she'd "be up"
for a duet with her sister,
finally got her wish. Roz and Barbra have
been performing together ever since Montreal.
But unlike Barbra's son Jason Gould,
who debuted his magnificent voice
for first time during the show, we've all
known for years that Roz can
sing. In fact, she is an
extremely successful performer
in her own right.
Roz displays a musical style
that
is similar to Barbra's during
her own nightclub performances, though
you'll never catch her singing
"Evergreen," "The Way We Were"
or heaven forbid, "People."
Instead, Roz dips into other
Broadway songbooks to form her
act. She's also a wonderful
interpreter of Alan and Marilyn
Bergman's music - at least those
rare numbers not usually covered by
her sister.
Still, the comparisons are
inevitable. And of
course,
anyone who
attended one of Barbra's more
recent (read: not Brooklyn or
Philly)
concerts was able to
finally
enjoy watching the two sisters'
side-by-side performance.
The number they chose
is the classic "Happy Days/Get
Happy" duet made famous by
Barbra/Judy back in 1963. The
Barbra/Roz version has only
gotten better as the tour
progressed.
Check
out their magnificent sister act

Vancouver
show

agree. |

Barbra
to Honor Marvin Hamlisch During
Tour
August 11, 2012
Barbra
told Susan King of the
L.A.
Times
that
she plans to pay tribute to her
friend, the late Marvin Hamlisch
during each of her upcoming
concerts.
The tribute should include a
performance of "The Way We
Were," this time using Hamlisch's
arrangement from the film. Barbra
wanted to tell Hamlisch all
about those plans, but was
unable to reach him the night
before he died.
Barbra
plans to dedicate her upcoming
album, "Release Me" to
Hamlisch. It's expected to be
released this fall.
Looking ahead, Barbra also told King that she
would like to record the show
tune "Any Moment Now" (from the
1986 Hamlisch musical, "Smile")
on a future album of duets. |

Il

Il
Volo
is a
pop-opera
male vocal trio with a large fan base in Europe and a
growing following in the U.S. In America, they were featured
performers on "American Idol" singing their signature song, "O
Solo Mio."
The boys of Il Volo are Piero Barone (age 18), Ignazio
Boschetto (age 17), and Gianluca Ginoble (age 17).
In a statement released today, Il Volo said, “We are thrilled to
perform with Barbra Streisand, who has inspired us through her art. We
are at the beginning of our careers and are so very grateful to her
for this great opportunity.”
In a subsequent interview with the Chicago Sun Times
(Aug. 16),
they went on to say, "It’s a dream come true for us. Of course
[we] love her music. Who doesn’t love the music of Barbra
Streisand? She is the monument of music for us."
And Il Volo mentioned their favorite Streisand song: “Come
Tomorrow.” That song is so great."
Did you know that
Barbra has already
recorded a single with
Il Volo? Billed under
their individual
names, the members of
Il Volo sang with
Barbra and others on
the 2010 single for
Haitian relief, "We
Are the World."

Barbra's

Not just New York home, but Brooklyn home.
In a

announced that she will play the newly minted Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn on October 11.
The Barclays Center is Brooklyn's answer to Manhattan's Madison Square Garden. When
Barbra Streisand steps
on stage, just weeks after its doors officially open, the

Barbra

|
As
expected, news of Barbra's
upcoming concert in
Brooklyn was a big deal in
the New York media.
Borough
President Marty Markowitz,
a key player in bringing
Barbra back to Brooklyn
savored the moment in a
very public and creative
way. Decked out in his
finest Barbra T-shirt,
Markowitz took a well
deserved victory lap
around the local talk show
circuit.
Speaking with the local
NBC affiliate in New York,
the Borough President
expressed his excitement
at Barbra Streisand's
prodigal return to
Brooklyn:
"Even
though she's been out in
La La land all these
years, the truth of the
matter is, once a
Brooklynite, always a
Brooklynite."
We're
sure he'll get a front row
center seat for his
extraordinary efforts.
The
day after the
announcement of
Barbra's concert,
the Brooklyn
edition of the New
York Daily News
ran a full page
feature called "Babs'
Brooklyn - The Way
We Were."
They
talked about the
Brooklyn Barbra
knew growing up
and the changes
she's sure to
notice when she
returns home this
fall.

"I've Been Here"
Although
Barbra's upcoming Brooklyn concert is unprecedented, it
certainly won't be the first time she's been to Brooklyn since
achieving superstardom some five decades ago.
Remember Barbra's 1974 comedy "For
Pete's Sake?" Many of the scenes were filmed on the streets of
Brooklyn. In fact, at the iconic moment when Barbra's character
Henrietta emerges from the utility manhole cover, she finds
herself at 4th Avenue and Douglass Street. If Henry walks 6
blocks north on 4th Avenue (behind her), she'd arrive at the
spot where the Barclays Center is now located.
Barbra was in
Brooklyn during the 80s, too. Early in the decade,
Barbra attended to a traditional Jewish Orthodox wedding in
Brooklyn as a
research assignment for her upcoming film, "Yentl." She talked
about the experience on the "Yentl" DVD.
And in 1993, Barbra made a visit to the famed Brooklyn Academy
of Music. To the dismay of (then) Brooklyn Borough President Howard
Golden and everyone else in attendance, including Alan and
Marilyn Bergman, Barbra wasn't there to perform ("...not without
selling a few tickets first", remarked the president of the
Brooklyn Academy). Instead, Barbra gave an impassioned speech to
support the reelection efforts of incumbent Mayor David Dinkins.
